All of us have heard horror stories (or read about them in the paper) where a person played the role of physician at a clinic or hospital without being identified for many months.

Physicians work in hospitals every day alongside interns, residents and fellows. However, hospitals do not uniformly credential the interns, residents and fellows as they believe the work is being done by the medical schools.

If you are on a Hospital Board of Directors or involved with a hospital department that uses interns, residents and fellows, it is worthwhile to investigate how the hospital credentials for graduate medical education (GME). Primary source verification should be done for all training permits, licenses, medical school, etc. In addition, current immunizations and queries of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) should accompany the traditional orientation done at the beginning of each rotation.
